26 May 2020: Harvest

Untitled

We closed a small ⭕️ this past weekend.

At the start of the circuitbreaker, we planted more #edibles. Specifically, Bayam (Asian Spinach; Amaranthus) in our homemade #wickingpot. Hope helped to tend it carefully while Mama watched for my nemesis, the Mealy Bug.

Little by little, they grew. On Saturday, we had our mini #harvest. Hope thoroughly enjoyed the fruits of her labour.

Even as we are blessed with the resources to grow our own food (it shouldn’t be a privilege, but we will change that), I’m reminded by this #bible verse from Deuteronomy 24: 19, to share what we have:

“When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.”

The 3rd #permaculture ethic of fair sharing of our excess fully aligns with biblical wisdom.

In my work, we share the Asset-based Community Development framework (ABCD) as a means for citizen-led, strengths-based and dignified community change.

Often the first step is asset mapping; we use a pentagonal 5H framework to discover the gifts of individuals. This place helps me see the 5H model afresh.

The alignment of knowledge (Head), passion (Heart)and practice (Hands) builds on God’s creation to create a sanctuary. A haven that grounds me (Heel) no matter the times. More importantly, it’s also a gathering ground that bonds our family (Human connection). Hope waters the plants while HJ watches for pests. Truly, few things ease the breath and calm the eyes as quickly as greenery

I’m grateful to the Lord for His blessings. I look forward to sharing this abundance when fruits appear in this edible balcony.
